Text Box: Mumbo Jumbo know what they’re doing. Between them, they’ve put in a lot of roadwork, and it shows. They cover a lot of bases, talking in jazz, blues, and a raft of mostly American popular music styles from the 40s onwards. They do this very well indeed, with solid musicianship, and an unpretentious confidence. You only get that kind of musical front through knowing exactly what you want to do after years of sifting and experimentation. The three core members – Chris Lomas (guitars and more), Abby Brant (keys) and Oliver Carpenter (horns) – clearly understand each other inside out and front to back. Brant’s keyboard work, especially, is solid, funky and muscular. Bolt the capacity for punchy three-part harmonies and widely different solo vocal approaches from sweet to grizzly bear, and you’ve got a terrific mixture. Most of the material on this CD is band-written, but it tips an authoritative nod to whole range of styles. I haven’t seen them live… yet… but I bet they tear the place down.

Text Box: They have put together a mighty fine debut album which will bear repeated listenings, and I would suggest will probably get better with those listenings. It is certainly a feel good album and leaves a smile much more than a frown. But maybe that is not surprising given the talent and experience of its creators. For me this is far more than just another blues album and I would easily recommend it to lovers of jazz, swing and music of a bygone age. There really is something for everyone on here ….. and I am not talking mumbo jumbo ….. for a change.
